This nugget of story was written at some point between 2001 and 2006 (though probably earlier rather than later) and was salvaged from an old hard drive that was about to get binned. I actually have no idea what I was writing at this point; I think it was the start of a short story that stalled before it really got off the ground, something you’ll soon see is a bit of a theme for me.
It’s far less polished than the previous piece as it was never gone over for editing, let alone ‘finished’ as the other piece was. I have deliberately not re-read this before posting it as I found my urge to tinker with the Opal Spheres piece quite overwhelming and I don’t think I’d be able to resist this time.
I am going to continue posting old works in date order until I get up to the present so people can see how my writing has (hopefully) matured over time. Bear with me through a few more From The Vault pieces and we’ll be up to the present soon.
I wrote the following short piece at some point in 2000 or 2001 whilst I was in college. It was a mood piece for an online game I was involved in creating at the time (which never came to fruition as the main coder went to University) called Opal Spheres. It was never intended to be published in the game, I created it so I could get a feel for an area I was designing and some of the magic available in the setting, and has only been read by a handful of people since.
Bearing in mind it’s over a decade old please be gentle with any comments you have, I hope my writing has improved a little in the intervening years.
I’m Jon. I write.
At least, that’s the plan. I have often thought about trying to be an author, or at least about trying to get some of the ideas in my head down in text for others to enjoy (I cannot draw for toffee so words it is), but I’ve never really had the drive to actually sit down with pen to paper and make it happen outside of a few sporadic bursts every year or so. I’ve started this blog to try to change that by airing some of my old short pieces and using it as a public forum to show new material with the hope that this will spur me on to produce more words, more frequently. I normally write fantasy or science fiction so if you’re not a fan of those genres this may not be the ideal place, but I will also be undertaking a few writing challenges at various points that will draw me outside of this little bubble.
In addition to this I’ll be using this as a personal blog if I find something interesting enough I want to write about; any words on paper are good at this stage. If you’re not interested in the prattle I will be tagging posts appropriately so you only need see the content you want.
Finally, you may soon note that I have no idea how to use WordPress so apologies in advance if the site does some funny things when I’m not expecting it.
I appreciate any time you take to read what I post and appreciate more any comments you leave me, either here or elsewhere, about what you’ve read.
Jon. Writer. Maybe.
